Texting YouTube links back-and-forth on WhatsApp is one way in which my friends and I keep each other up-to-date with the next installment date of our favorite film. Upcoming movie releases are a big deal with the mega excitement. Upcoming movie releases are a big deal. One member of our group goes through all the back stories to get the latest angle of speculation that might influence the coming film. Seeing the newly released trailer causes so much excitement.
Excitement creates social movements
Outside of my group, Reddit has many groups that number in the thousands. One recent group on this platform that I discovered is r/cinema. There are 1.4 million members in this group. This is precisely my point. New movies coming soon, as well as discussing favorite scenes from films that have already gone, is a huge deal. But sometimes, we are not in the mood to go to the movies in the crowd during a premiere weekend. If it is being streamed for a price, we may just pay that and enjoy our own movie magic at home with our surround sound. Similarly, I had to go see AVATAR 3 at Lowes Lincoln Square with IMAX along with my son.
This IMAX screen is also in 3D, and you know what? It is totally ‘off-the-charts-amazing.’ On another occasion, we had a ‘father-son day,’ which started with one of the Jurassic Park movies in IMAX, followed by a surprise trip to a Monster Truck Rally. My son was beside himself and could not contain his happiness. This just made the energy of the hype worth it even more on that day.
At another time, we chose a completely random film (or so we thought). It was set right here in Brooklyn and apparently was a highly anticipated modern Russian love story. Anora turned out to be unexpectedly intense in so many ways but had a very satisfying ending. But honestly, we were shocked when it won multiple Oscars.
