What’s Happening to the Film Industry and AI? While at work this morning, I had the most interesting discussions with one of my coworkers. He was trying to convince his daughter that her choice of career as a graphic designer, approaching the end of high school, did not have a viable future given the rapid advancements of AI. I went on to share with him that as a designer, this was one of my concerns – I am literally about to graduate, and I am already replaceable in the eyes of the job market. AI has made me an option and no longer a necessity to the design and branding process. Fast forward, watching this video Peace titled “Something Strange is Happening in the Film Industry.”
This whole conversation came back to me because the traditional-minded, intellectual property watchdogs and creators of movie content through traditional means seem to be downplaying the rapid advancement of Generative AI movie creation and the newly renovated attention spans of users, increasingly cellphone-focused.
So the question is: will cellphone viewing become the predominant market-driven trend for content viewing? Will our cellphones become the primary destination for social media video content at the level of the major TV networks? Not only that, but will AI-driven content accelerate the pace of video creation and amplify the appetite for content types and categories that have never been seen before? As a designer, I have listened to fellow designers criticize AI, and inside myself, I could tell that they are simply out of touch with the massive and extremely positive side of the AI-driven economic shift that is taking place.
The bottom line is that we may all be witnessing the birthing process of a brand new film industry. This new film industry may very well be categorized by Neue, the Giants Avenue type of film content. Or it may not be characterized by any one or top five film companies. It may be categorized by hundreds of companies all around the world. Time will tell as AI continues to unfold.
