Villeneuve, the Director of the epic Dune 2 movie, insisted on bringing back the award-winning costume designer Jacqueline West. In this Warner Brothers Entertainment documentary, (WATCH NOW) she describes her thoughts behind her creative process. Several creative parameters were explored which gave the movie its uniqueness,  look and feel.

What made the project especially challenging, yet at the same time extremely productive and groundbreaking, was the director’s insistence on creating a whole new set of costumes that had never been seen before in part one. DUNE 3 is expected to follow the same trend.

But how do you create an alien world that is yet human, relatable, yet different in that it has never been seen before? One commentator in the documentary describes Jacqueline West’s creative instinct as primal in nature. Her ability to tap into the creative mind of the Director has placed her at the pinnacle of the industry. She describes having to create uniforms for every planet, every ethnic group represented in the movie. Within each ethnic group their hierarchies in their societies.

Each of these social stratifications needed its own costumes as well. The warrior costumes had to be created in such a way as to facilitate movement during the fight scenes. The costumes also had to match the stories being told in the movie, as well as the climate in which the story was being told. With this in mind, the color palettes were carefully selected. The textures of materials needed to be in harmony with the environment to add to the atmosphere.

Some parts of her team were responsible for molding completely original garment shapes from scratch. Others focused on sewing, while others focused on designing. There were staff who focused on inventory and those who focused on fitting, and so much more. Ultimately, they created a movie series that was primal yet advanced, political yet spiritual, dark yet filled with hope.
