Disney sequels from the late ’90s usually get a bad rap. Most were rushed, low-budget cash-ins that went straight to VHS. But in 1998, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride defied the odds. It didn’t just piggyback on the greatest animated movie of all time; it actually built a complex, emotionally deep world that rivaled the original.
While the first film took its notes from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which I was reminded of. Simba’s Pride brilliantly adapts Romeo and Juliet. We follow Kiara, Simba’s headstrong daughter, and Kovu, the hand-picked heir to the exiled villain Scar. The stakes are high. This isn’t just a simple love story; it’s a generational trauma drama wrapped in a Disney package. Simba, once the carefree prince, is now an overprotective, deeply flawed father blinded by past betrayals.
Let’s be honest: the soundtrack also absolutely clears the bar. Songs like “He Lives in You” and the villain anthem “My Lullaby” capture the grand, orchestral weight of the original Elton John and Lebo M. collaboration.The
